Help & FAQ

How It Works

What do leftBrain Performance Assessments do?

Our scientifically validated Assessments measure GritABC™ Skills—Attitudes, Behavior, and Character—that are scientifically proven to help athletes excel, above and beyond their raw athletic talent.

You can use the results of your assessments in the following ways:

  • You can voluntarily share your results with sports organizations and/or coaches/mentors of your choice that you'd like to work with. This will generate scientifically-validated statistics as to the extent to which you personally fit with various teams. You and potential coaches and/or mentors can use this information to decide which programs are the best fit for you.
Can I take the leftBrain Performance Assessment if I'm not currently applying to a sports program?

Absolutely! You can take our assessments in order to identify areas of GritABC™ Skills—Attitudes, Behavior, and Character—in which you can personally improve to maximize your athletic excellence.

You can even find a mentor of your choice to help you develop as an athlete. Scientific research suggests that people can change social, emotional, and behavioral skills, such as GritABC™ Skills, and consequently improve their lives and well-being Hudson, 2021; Hudson & Fraley, 2015; 2016; Hudson et al., 2019; Stieger et al., 2021.

Can I share my results with organizations after I've taken the assessment?

You can share your results with a sports organization of your choice.

We recommend sharing your results with organizations before completing the assessment. Organizational representatives (e.g., coaches) will be notified as to whether you opted to share your results with them before or after finishing the assessment. It always looks better to share your results before you see the outcomes. It comes across as more honest.

Can I "unshare" my results with organizations?

Unfortunately, no. Once you share your results with an organization, they've already been given a chance to see your results.

How accurate are my results?

Our assessments are designed by real personality psychologists with extensive expertise in personality and social/emotional/behavioral skills assessment, statistics, and psychometrics. Moreover, your personal results are compared to other athletes who have completed our assessments. Thus, our assessments gauge how you compare to others extremely accurately.

Our assessments always ask you to respond with respect to how you see yourself in general. Thus, the accuracy of your results depends on the honesty with which you respond. Keep in mind that our assessments contain advanced algorithms to detect dishonest responding—the results of which are reported to organizations to which you apply. Nevertheless, it is possible that your GritABC™ Skills may change across time as you continue to develop and train the Attitudes, Behavior, and Character aspects of GritABC™. Thus, we recommend re-completing our assessment at least every six months in order to provide the most up-to-date profile of your current GritABC™ Skills.

Are leftBrain Performance Assessments and services actually backed by scientific evidence?

Absolutely! leftBrain Performance is partially owned and operated by psychologists with PhDs in personality psychology. Our algorithms are informed by real-world, empirical, performance-based data, combined with proprietary statistical techniques developed by experts in psychometrics to help identify GritABC™ Skills and to match athletes to organizations with good fit.

Why Use leftBrain?

Why should I use leftBrain Performance's Assessments?

Everyone seems to know of an experience where the athlete and program just seemed to be a poor fit. An athlete that seemed incredibly promising is recruited and then fails dramatically after they join the organization. This is a negative experience for everyone involved—including both the athlete and the sports organization. It's no one's fault. Sometimes athletes simply don't fit well within particular organizations.

leftBrain Performance assessments measure (1) athletes' GritABC™ Skills, as well as (2) their personalized fit to various sports programs to which they apply. Our scientifically validated matching algorithms—which utilize real-world data—can maximize athlete-organization fit and thus help recruit athletes who will excel in your program in particular.

Finally, leftBrain Performance assessments are designed by real personality psychologists with expertise in psychometrics and social/emotional/behavioral skill change. Thus, you can trust that our assessments and services are always backed by real, evidence-based science Hudson, 2021; Hudson & Fraley, 2015; 2016; Hudson et al., 2019; Stieger et al., 2021.

What does leftBrain add above and beyond talent scouts?

Talent scouts can observe an athlete's raw athletic performance and talent. However, they cannot observe intangibles, including:

  1. The athlete's GritABC™ Skills—Attitudes, Behavior, and Character—which helps determine their ability to excel
  2. The athlete's personal fit to the program and coach
  3. The athlete's ability to succeed in specific programs

No one wants to recruit an athlete who ends up warming the bench because they do not fit the program or coach's personalized style. leftBrain Performance helps identify athletes that will have maximal success in your program—using real, empirical, performance-based data from our comparative athlete data pool, as well as from organizational data that is factored into our algorithms.

Privacy & Data Usage

How are my data (responses) used?

As described in our privacy policy, whenever you complete an assessment on our website, you consent to allow your results to be permanently stored indefinitely. You further consent to allow your results to be used for academic research purposes, as well as for informing leftBrain's algorithms.

leftBrain Performance does not share your responses/data with other non-academic third-parties, except organizations and/or Mentors that you explicitly choose to share your responses with.

Your responses will be shared with any sports organizations and/or Mentors with which you personally choose to share your results. Sharing your results with sports organizations and/or Mentors is never compulsory, but nevertheless cannot be undone once you personally choose to share your results.

How private are my data (responses)?

As described in our privacy policy, whenever you complete an assessment on our website, you consent to allow your results to be permanently stored indefinitely. You further consent to allow your results to be used for academic research purposes, as well as for informing leftBrain's algorithms.

What this means is that academic and/or scientific researchers will use your data (responses) to look for aggregate trends in the data in order to optimally predict athletic performance and athlete-organization fit. Scientific researchers are not interested in building a profile of you personally; rather, they simply want to understand aggregate—or average—trends.

You may voluntarily choose to share your responses with sports organizations (e.g., teams, universities, colleges, clubs, combines, scouts, agents, recruiters) and/or Mentors with which you would like to work. This sharing action is permanent and cannot be undone.

Your personal responses and data will not be shared with any non-academic organizations, other than the sports organizations that you personally authorize to access your responses and data.

Can I delete my account/data (responses)?

You can delete your account at any time.

If you choose to delete your account, your results will no longer be shared with sports organizations and/or Mentors with which you've shared your data, and those organizations and/or Mentors will be directed to remove any copies of your results that they may have retained outside of the leftBrain Performance system.

If you choose to delete your account, leftBrain Performance will permanently disassociate all personally identifiable information (e.g., your name, email address, etc.) from your data. However, your data will be retained indefinitely (in anonymous format) and will be used for academic research and/or to inform future development of leftBrain's algorithms.
